3D printers operate by placing layers of molten plastic on top of each other printing from the bottom up. A computerised 3D design in an STL format is sliced producing very precise instructions for the printer to follow layer by layer. In some cases due to the geometry and orientation of the model being printed it may require supports for overhanging areas. The printer produces the supports as it prints. The supports are easily removed once the print is complete.
There are many types of plastics used in 3D printing we currently use the following three:
TPU - flexible whilst still retaining its shape
PLA - modeling plastic biodegradable
PETG - strong functional plastic
